As a youth he was educated as a King's scholar at Westminster School and later graduated from Christ Church College Oxford. William MURRAY was a barrister, politician and judge. He was called to the bar in 1730 and in 1742 was returned as MP for Boroughbridge. Well known as a reformer of English law he served as Solicitor General and Lord Chief Justice in England. In 1738 he married Lady Elizabeth FINCH (1704-1784) daughter of Daniel FINCH (1647-1730) 2nd Earl of Nottingham and 7th Earl of Winchelsea by Anne HATTON (1668-1743). They had no issue but cared for their niece Lady Elizabeth MURRAY (born 1760) and the natural daughter Dido Elizabeth Belle of their nephew Sir John LINDSAY.
