A GEORGE III SILVER SHAPED OVAL MEAT DISHJOHN PARKER I & EDWARD WAKELIN, LONDON 1765With a gadrooned border and engraved with an armorial 46cm (18in) long1476g (47.45 oz)The armorial for William MURRAY (1705-1799) created 1776 1st Earl Mansfield, late of Kenwood House and his wife Elizabeth nee FINCH (1647-1730).William MURRAY was born at Scone Palace, Perthshire the fourth son of David MURRAY (1665-1731), 5th Viscount of Stormont and his wife Marjory nee SCOTT (died 1746), both of his parents being supporters of the Jacobite cause. As a youth he was educated as a King's scholar at Westminster School and later graduated from Christ Church College Oxford. William MURRAY was a barrister, politician and judge. He was called to the bar in 1730 and in 1742 was returned as MP for Boroughbridge. Well known as a reformer of English law he served as Solicitor General and Lord Chief Justice in England. In 1738 he married Lady Elizabeth FINCH (1704-1784) daughter of Daniel FINCH (1647-1730) 2nd Earl of Nottingham and 7th Earl of Winchelsea by Anne HATTON (1668-1743). They had no issue but cared for their niece Lady Elizabeth MURRAY (born 1760) and the natural daughter Dido Elizabeth Belle of their nephew Sir John LINDSAY.
