AN INDIAN COLONIAL TROPHY CUP AND COVERTWENTYMAN & CO., CALCUTTA CIRCA 1835With a foliate finial to the ogee domed cover, chased with a floral band and a tongue and foliate border, the body half chased with a conforming floral band, twin floral chased loop handles, engraved 'To Captain J. Herring 37th Regiment as a mark of esteem from the undermentioned member of the Mess....' and on a circular moulded spreading pedestal foot34cm (13 1/2in) high1685g (54.15 oz) John Herring arrived in India on the 10th Sept 1805. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant during the Nepal War in 1814 - 1815. His Indian military adventures took him to Afghanistan during the First Afghan War of 1838-42 as a Lieutenant-Colonel in the 37th Regiment of the Bengal Native Infantry.
