Andalusian school of the 17th century."Immaculate Conception with Saint Joachim and Saint Anne".Oil on canvas. Relined.Missing in the frame.Measurements: 61 x 48 cm; 77 x 66 cm (frame). The Christian tradition has considered Joachim and Anne as the progenitors of Mary. These names are taken from the Protoevangelium of James, one of the most famous and oldest apocryphal gospels. The present work depicts a heavenly apparition that takes place above the two characters, revealing to the couple that they are to conceive Mary. This revelation is embodied in the form of a girl in a flowing gown above a crescent moon, symbol of the Immaculate Conception. It is a fully Baroque composition, with the figures in the foreground, on the earthly plane, and a break of glory on the heavenly plane. Due to its technical and stylistic characteristics, the work can be placed within the framework of the 17th-century Andalusian school.
