Spanish school of the 16th century."Empress Eleanor of Austria".Oil on canvas. Re-coloured at the beginning of the 20th century.Measurements: 66 x 50 cm; 77 x 61 cm (frame). The portrait of the Empress Eleanor of Austria that we now present can be related to the artistic guidelines of Juan Pantoja de la Cruz, not only because of the treatment of the clothes and the lily of the valley, of tremendous detail, but also because of the royal bearing of the sitter. Thus, the piece remains faithful to the rigid official canons established in the time of Philip II. Pantoja de la Cruz was an important court interpreter who devoted himself to producing official portraits, distant and somewhat rigid, emphasised by fashion, very sober. As in the present work of Eleanor of Austria, his compositions were simple, with few elements, and generally depicted the sitter in three-quarter length. Attention to quality and detail was also characteristic of his painting.
