Novo-Hispanic or Spanish school, mid-18th century.Coat of arms of the Duke of Veragua.Top in carved, gilded and polychromed wood, with elements in tinted glass and oil painting.Measurements: 76 x 169 x 12 cm.The coat of arms of the Duchy of Veragua is represented here with all its heraldic details, as they were reproduced in the 18th century, when the ducal title was held by Francisco Eduardo Fitz-James Stuart y Colón de Portugal. The heraldry is painted in oils and flanked by scrolls in stained glass, all on a carved and gilded wooden stand-matrix with plant motifs in the rococo style. The duchy of Veragua was given by the Crown of Spain to Luis Colón (Christopher Columbus's grandson), along with the titles of Marquis of Jamaica, Admiral and Major Advance of the Indies, in exchange for renouncing the titles of Viceroy of the discovered lands of the Ocean Sea, and a percentage of the profits of the discovered territories. The territorial dominion was created on 19 January 1537 during the reign of Charles I of Spain, consisting of a small section of the former governorate of Veragua, on the Caribbean coast, and a portion of territory of the governorate of Castilla del Oro, which would be divided in two, on the coast of the Pacific Ocean.
