山子是清代文房几案上常见的陈设品，此山子以青金石为质，凸雕一傍巨岩而建的小台，亭台外大树遮檐，文人伏案而息。通体泛青金石特有的幽蓝，观之新颖别致，青金石在中国古代称为璆琳、金精、瑾瑜，青黛等。佛教称为吠努离或璧琉璃，是古代东西方文化交流的见证之一。资料显示，青金石是通过“丝绸之路”从阿富汗传入中国。清代所制山形盆景极多，但青金石山子较少，选料如此硕大，优良者更为难得。
