如意，出现于战国之时，又称“搔杖”，清《事物异名录》曰：“如意者，古之爪杖也”。用以搔痒，可如人意。如意在印度梵语中称“阿娜律”，为佛家持物，讲经问道时用。明清之际，灵芝造型如意象徵吉祥驱邪，常做祝贺皇室寿辰之厚礼。沉香作为一种名贵的材料，具有重要的药用价值，需要数十年甚至上百年才能结成。在中国古代自然採集和进口的条件下显得非常珍贵，材料越大越是难能可贵。上等沉香，木脂凝结厚重，随时间沉淀，其味凝练含蓄，细嗅幽香，持握手中，香气遇温而逸散，清香袭袭。
