此斋戒牌为沉香雕刻而成，材质珍贵，雕“斋戒”二字，周围辅以人物纹，意指祭祀时戒除嗜欲以示虔诚。斋戒牌乃古人祭祀前斋戒牌时所佩之物。所谓斋戒，《明史礼志》记载：“戒者，禁止其外；斋者，整齐其内。”清代沿袭明制实行斋戒，清帝及文武官员祭祀时挂于身上，作警示用，亦为皇宫贵族佩带之饰品。此牌清香淡雅，线条流畅，纹理清晰，包浆沉厚温润，为宫廷皇家之物，等级不凡。
