17th century Andalusian school. "Diana and Endimion". Oil on canvas. Re-coloured. It presents repainting and restorations. Measurements: 106 x 134 cm; 121 x 148 cm (frame). We are in front of a mythological work according to the naturalistic taste of the baroque, something that, together with the warm chromatism, well toned, the veristic treatment of characters and animals and the tenebrist and scenographic illumination, allows us to place this work in the Andalusian school of the XVII century. It depicts a beautiful woman dressed in classical costume, whom we can identify with the goddess Diana. This is the moment when she descends to Earth and contemplates the shepherd Endymion, here represented with weapons and a warrior s armour, and falls in love with his beauty. Throughout the history of art, it has been customary to depict Endymion as a shepherd sleeping peacefully while being watched by Diana the Huntress. On this occasion, however, Endymion is depicted awake, in a playful attitude with one of Diana s hunting dogs.
