Colonial chest from the 17th century. Embossed and gilded leather, wood and wrought iron. Measurements: 27 x 56 x 32 cm. Colonial Baroque chest, from the 17th century, built with a wooden core that is completely hidden except for the base, covered on the outside by engraved leather. It is a prismatic box, built with assembled one-piece boards, with a hinged top lid. These rear hinges are joined at the front, to which the locking espagnolette is attached. The lock escutcheon consists of a cut-out, openwork metal plate with a typically Baroque design. In addition, the casket has additional fittings that reinforce the construction, located on the corner joints and on the front and back of the lid. The sides of the chest have arched handles. The decoration on the leather, which is entirely engraved, is profuse and complex, executed with virtuosity and meticulousness, and reflects the decorative taste of the Baroque period, reinforced by the horror vacui tendency of the colonial schools. On the front of the piece, two knights can be seen, each standing at the sides of the keyhole. Both carry musical instruments. The lid of the piece is dominated by a large winged shield, which is surrounded by more vegetal motifs, with stems, leaves and palmettes, a decoration that covers the entire surface of the piece.
