CHRISTIAN DAVID GEBAUER (Neusalz an der Oder, Denmark, 1777 - Aarhus, 1831). "Shepherds by a Hut". Oil on canvas. Re-coloured. With gilt Empire style frame. Provenance: house of the Danish consul in Barcelona in 1910. It presents faults and old restorations. The frame has old xylophages and faults. Measurements: 55,5 x 55 cm; 64,5 x 63 cm (frame). An animal painter, landscape painter and engraver, Christian David Gebauer trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied with C.A. Lorentzen. He exhibited his student works, a mixture of ink drawings and oil paintings, and caught the attention of Nicolai Abildgaard. Shortly afterwards, Count Reventlow became his patron. In 1807, the outbreak of the Gunboat War aroused his interest in battle painting and he applied for royal travel grants, which were eventually granted. In 1813 he used part of his money to travel to Germany, where he witnessed the aftermath of the battle of Dresden. In 1815 he was appointed a member of the Royal Academy.
