Flemish school, 17th century. "Communion of a saint". Oil on copper. Measurements: 66 x 51,5,5 cm; 86 x 71 cm (frame). We are in front of the theme of the communion of a saint. It could be Mary Magdalene, because of the way she appears characterised, with long hair and beautiful features. The subject of Mary Magdalene s Eucharist was relatively little treated in comparison with other episodes of the saint, in particular that of the penitent Magdalene. Here, the saint appears in the centre of the composition, with her fine ivory skin, kneeling before the priest and ready for Holy Communion. Angels hold the altar cloth, and the ceiling inside the church shows a break in glory. Of particular note is the skilful work of the golden filigree on the chasuble, as well as the depiction of the angels foreshortened positions and the anecdotal details added by the painter, for example the two women exchanging confidences behind the Magdalene. The figure of Mary Magdalene was particularly popular in the Baroque period. The theme of the sacraments as a means of eternal salvation was also popularised at the time in order to counter the Protestant attacks.
