GASTÓN CASTELLÓ BRAVO (Alicante, 1902 - 1986)."Hindu Woman".Mixed media on cardboard.Signed and titled in the lower area.Size: 36,5 x 28,5 cm: 56,5 x 58,5 cm (frame).Painter and mosaist, favourite son of Alicante, Castelló was the author of a solid and friendly work, which captured folklore, festivals and popular types. He also devoted himself to the making of fallas, introducing a stylised decorativism that would shape the Alicante style in force in the bonfires until the 1950s. He began his training with the painter Fernando Cabrera, being the only pupil that the latter admitted under his tutelage. In 1921 he took part in an exhibition and was invited by Emilio Varela to exhibit with him. In 1924 he travelled to Madrid for the first time, where he completed his training at the Círculo de Bellas Artes, in his life drawing classes. He returned to Alicante in 1928. In 1945 he definitively achieved official recognition when he was commissioned by Alicante City Council to produce a large triptych to decorate its halls. He took part in national painting competitions, being awarded a silver medal in 1952. Throughout his life he travelled several times, making sketches and oil paintings in different parts of Europe, Algeria and Morocco. In 1974 he painted a mosaic for the international airport of El Altet (Alicante).
