Neapolitan school of the 17th century. "Saint Peter". Oil on canvas. Relined. It has repainting and slight losses in the margins of the painting. Measurements: 50 x 40 cm; 63 x 53 cm (frame). In this devotional painting, the face of St. Peter is directed towards the sky, interpellating God. The black glow of the pupils, the watery and imploring eyes, have been resolved in such a way that it is possible to identify the workmanship of the caravaggista Giusseppe Verniglio. See Verniglio`s extensive gallery of saints, whose countenances express rapture and devotion in equal measure. This is a Baroque work, rooted in the Tenebrist tradition of Caravaggio. The aged features of Saint Peter, the bushy white beard and the divine zenithal light, which skilfully models the features, allow us to recognise attributes of Giuseppe Vermiglio`s workshop. Giuseppe Vermiglio was a Caravaggist painter from northern Italy, also active in Rome. He was probably born in Alessandria. He spent the first two decades of the 17th century in Rome where, while training and working as an artist, he adopted a Bohemian lifestyle. Around 1620 he returned to northern Italy, where he continued his career as a painter in Piedmont (Novara and Alessandria) and Lombardy (especially Mantua and Milan). His art was profoundly influenced by Caravaggio. Other painters to whom his work is attributed, on the basis of stylistic references, are the Bolognese Annibale Carracci and Guido Reni ; it has been suggested that Vermiglio worked or studied in Bologna at some point. Luigi Lanzi acclaimed the painting of "Daniel among the Lions", in the library of the Passione in Milan, as his masterpiece. Some paintings attributed to Vermiglio are: Coronation of Thorns / Mocking Christ , formerly in the Palazzo Altieri , Rome; Cain and Abel . National Museum of Fine Arts , Valletta; Adoration of the Shepherds , signed and dated 1622. Pinacoteca di Brera , Milan; Last Supper , signed and dated 1622. Pinacoteca di Brera, Milan; The Sacrifice of Isaac . Musei Civici del Castello Sforzesco, Milan; St. James the Greater. Galleria Repossi, Italy.
