14th century A.D. A pewter pilgrim's badge for John the Baptist at Charing, Kent, showing a facing bust within a circular pelletted frame with traces of pin to reverse. Found on the Thames foreshore, London, UK. Acquired on the UK antiques market between 1974-1985. Albert Ward collection (part 4), Essex, UK. Richard I brought the stone block upon which John the Baptist was said to have been executed and deposited it at the church of Saints Peter and Paul at Charing, Kent; Charing is on the pilgrim route from Winchester to Canterbury and became a popular place for the pilgrims to stop at with inns and hostels sited there.
