14th-15th century A.D. A pewter retainer's badge depicting a fox running off with the head of a goose in its jaws and the rest of the bird slung back over its shoulder. 4.57 grams, 70 mm (2 3/4 in.). Found on the Thames foreshore, London, UK. Acquired on the UK antiques market between 1974-1985. Albert Ward collection (part 4), Essex, UK. The imagery of a goose and fox together is quite well known in Medieval art; examples may be seen in the Luttrell Psalter and other works of the 14th century A.D. and later and also provides the theme for a 'fox and geese' board game that dates back to at least the Middle Ages.
