The gloves evolved from a practical application into a signature style. Justice Ginsburg explained in a 2015 interview in the Washington Post: "Justice (Sandra Day) O'Connor said when I was having chemotherapy after colon cancer, 'You are vulnerable now, and you're going to receptions and shaking hands with lots of people, so you should at least wear gloves.' This was in 1999. So, I wore gloves and liked them so much, I decided to keep wearing them." Vogue Magazine cheekily described Ginsburg's lace gloves as "mall goth," arguing that they harken back to Madonna's "Like a Virgin" look of the 1980s, but they also are a throwback to Ginsburg's own youth in the 1940s and 1950s, when ladies wore gloves and hats when out in the world, though never in such an unconventional material as fishnet.
