A LUSHAN PHOSPHATIC-SPLASHED BROWN-GLAZED EWER, TANG DYNASTY
China, 618-907. Heavily potted, the ovoid body supported on a short, straight foot and set on the high shoulder with two small strap handles applied at the base of the neck between the short conical spout and the larger main handle. Covered in a finely crackled dark-brown glaze highlighted by splashes of milky blue running down from the shoulder and neck, stopping irregularly above the foot, revealing the buff-colored body. The base carved with a spiral design.
Provenance: From the collection of an important German scholar, assembled between 1961 and 1966. Thence by descent within the same family. A label to the base reading '112'.
Condition: Good condition commensurate with age and as expected from a large Tang dynasty ewer. Extensive old wear and weathering. Manufacturing flaws such as brown spots, firing cracks, kiln grit and pitting. The rim and foot with small chips, losses and hairlines.
Weight: 1,744 g
Dimensions: Height 20.3 cm
The bluish or yellowish-milky white 'phosphatic' splashes that decorate the dark brown-glazed wares of this type are applied after the initial glazing.
