Trumeau mirror. France, ca. 1820. Gilt and polychrome wood frame, stucco decorations. Engravings on the upper part. Glass mirror. Measurements: 58 x 45 cm; 111 x 69 cm. The rectangular mirror is housed in a first moulded and gilded wooden frame, which in turn rests on a polychrome wooden soffit. This is decorated with gilded stucco relief decorations in the form of vases from which long stems sprout. On the upper part are two engravings depicting peasant women. The trumeau mirror originated in 18th-century France and owes its name to the place it was intended for, the space between two windows. This situation multiplied the light in the room, both because of the reflections of the mirrored surface and because of the gilded carvings that often decorated the frames, which glittered in the light. This type of mirror is usually rectangular, and usually has an ornamental area at the top.
