Two English George III spyglasses. First quarter of the XIXth century. Gilt metal and leather. Marks on both pieces. In need of cleaning and refinishing. Wear and tear due to use and time. Measurements: 53 cm (larger closed); 21 cm (smaller closed). Two antique Georgian English spyglasses in gilt metal and brown leather, the bigger one with Peter Frith marks and the smaller one with Cesar Tagliabue mark. This achromatic nautical spyglass was made in the 1830s by Peter Frith of London, England. Peter Frith telescopes are in museums in Edinburgh and London, as well as other European cities and the United States. Peter Frith died in 1837. The manufacturer Cesar Tagliabue has an important role to play in the history of scientific instrument making. Tagliabue came from the Como region of Italy. Born in 1767, it is not clear when he arrived in Britain, but it is believed that he began trading in Holborn, London, in 1799 with a partner, Anthony Della Torre, until 1806, after which he began trading under his own name. By 1820, Tagliabue had moved to London`s famous scientific instrument-making centre in Hatton Garden.
