An underglaze painted pottery ewer Persia or Syria, 13th/ 14th CenturyAn underglaze painted pottery ewer Persia or Syria, 13th/ 14th Centuryof compressed globular form on a short foot with flaring neck, tapering spout and spiral handle, decorated in black under a turquoise glaze with a series of panels each containing alternating large circle and teardrop motifs filled with zig-zag shading, on a ground of scrolling split-palmette interlace, a small band of inscription around the upper shoulder, the neck with birds perching amidst scrolling vines 31.5 cm. highThe spiral handle on the present lot is similar to that on a ewer from the P.J. Higgins collection sold at Christie's, Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, 26 October 2017, lot 58, and attributed to 14th Century Damascus.
