A pair of Seljuk filigree gold earrings Persia, 12th Century(2)A pair of Seljuk filigree gold earrings Persia, 12th Centuryeach of convex crescentic form, the crescent with filigree and granulated decoration comprising flower-filled roundels, circular projections to one side and to outer edge, each surmounted by confronting birds, hinged suspension loops to top 6.2 cm. max. (2)This pair of earrings is remarkable for its size and good state of preservation. The motif of two confronting birds was common in Byzantine jewellery (Rachel Hasson, Early Islamic Jewellery, Jerusalem, 1987, no. 3, pl. 13) and was also a popular motif in Seljuk jewellery.
