A Mamluk engraved brass bowl Egypt or Syria, late 15th CenturyA Mamluk engraved brass bowl Egypt or Syria, late 15th Centuryof rounded form, the sides tapering towards a slightly everted rim, the underside of rounded form engraved and decorated with s-shaped panels containing vegetal interlace and geometric patterns leading to a central rosette, the sides profusely engraved with inscriptions and rosettes variously containing foliate and geometric interlace and heraldic blazons, all on a ground of vegetal interlace, the interior with roundel to the well containing a heraldic blazon surrounded by a border of vegetal interlace 31.5 cm. diam.Inscriptions: mimma 'umila bi-rasm al-'ali al-mawlawi al-amiri/ al-kabiri al-maliki al-makhdumi al-/, 'One of what was made for the high, the lordly, the great commander, the possessor, the well-served'.The same blazon can be seen on two dishes in the al-Sabah Collection, Kuwait, as depicted in D. Behrens-Abouseif, Metalwork from the Arab World and the Mediterranean, London, 2021, pp. 200-201, cat. 67 (inv. no. LNS 1598 M) and pp. 208-209, cat. 70 (inv. no. LNS 1177 M). It was used from Jaqmaq's reign (1483-53) to the end of the Mamluk period and depicts, in three registers, a napkin, a cup containing a pen-box flanked by powder horns and a cup.
