Anna Airy (1882-1964).Private UK collection, gifted in 1964 by Anna Airy.Anna Airy was an English painter and one of the first officially commissioned female war artists. Born in Greenwich, the daughter of the Civil Engineer Wilfred Airy, and granddaugher of the Astronomer Royal George Biddell Airy (1801-1892), she trained at the Slade School of Art alongside William Orpen and Augustus John. In 1918 she was commissioned by the Munitions Committee of the imperial War Museum to create four paintings including A Shell Forge at a National Projectile Factory, Hackney Marshes, London, and An Aircraft Assembly Shop, Hendon.
