A king seated on a tiger meets the sage Narada Pahari, probably Kangra, circa 1830-40A king seated on a tiger meets the sage Narada Pahari, probably Kangra, circa 1830-40gouache and gold on paper, blue inner border, pale pink outer border (now concealed under mount), inscribed verso in nasta'liq script 330 x 287 mm.ProvenancePrivate UK collection. The inscription reads: sarandhim surghuk, vabuta narah ji srim.Narada (nara, knowledge, da, giver) was a Vedic sage, famous in Hindu tradition as a divine seer and counsellor of kings such as Yudhishthira and Krishna in the Mahabharata and Bhagavata Purana. He is credited with inventing the musical instrument, the vina, which he is shown carrying over his left shoulder. The exact subject of scenes featuring Narada is not always clear, given the frequency of his counselling various kings in several texts. For another Kangra scene of similar date, depicting Narada in discussion with a king, this time in a palace interior, see Simon Ray, Indian and Islamic Works of Art, November 2017, no. 34.
