Italian school of the 18th century. "Saint John the Baptist". Oil on canvas. The work will be available approximately 15 days after payment has been made. Measurements: 47 x 35 cm; 62 x 50 cm (frame). The iconographic figure of San Juanito appears during the Renaissance in order to give more humanism to the figure of Christ. Thus, the Italian artists deepened the representation of infantile grace, showing an infant with curly hair, a serene face with blushing cheeks between which a half-smile is sketched. In his right hand he holds the cross of reeds from which waves the phylactery with the legend "ECCE AGNUS DEI" -This is the lamb of God-, a symbolic element with which Saint Johnny is traditionally represented in iconography. The saint, with gentle, soft features, despite being seated, adopts a "contrapposto" pose with his torso turned to the left, opening up the image towards the scene in the background. John, defined as the forerunner of Christ, is considered the last of the prophets and the first of the martyrs of Christianity, and in the Gospels it is he who announces the coming of the Messiah, later recognising him in Jesus Christ. By virtue of this testimony of faith, the iconography widely used over the centuries is that of him pointing to a lamb and holding a staff with the famous inscription.
