47 x 18 cm.
16th century Castilian school. "Immaculate Conception". Carved, polychromed and gilded wood. It presents losses. Measurements: 47 x 18 cm. Round sculpture in carved, polychromed and gilded wood, representing the Virgin as Immaculate, full-length, on a pedestal formed by cherub heads. The Virgin is dressed in a tunic and mantle, with her hands joined in prayer at chest level and her face looking towards her forehead. This image is still anchored in the Renaissance heritage due to its balanced position, as well as its closed composition, but it already shows the advance towards the Baroque style, especially in the broad, very chiaroscuro folds of the canvases, worked with a great deal of relief. In addition, the sculptor has taken particular care to reflect the serene and mystical happiness of Mary s face, which is magnificently achieved.
