Deva Sharma (Indian, B.1994) Tiny IIDeva Sharma (Indian, B.1994)Tiny II signed and dated 'Deva Vh 2020' lower leftwatercolour on paper, framed16.8 x 16.8cm (6 5/8 x 6 5/8in).ProvenanceArcher Graphic Studio, Ahmedabad.Born in Jammu and Kashmir, Sharma obtained her BA in Fine Arts from the Institute of Music and Fine Arts, Jammu in 2017. She subsequently studied at Maharaja Sayajirao University, Baroda where she obtained her degree in Printmaking (2019). Art to her is an aggregate of the recurring friction of one's self with complex societal relations. In her current oeuvre she explores questions pertaining to the meaning of being a woman in a pseudo-progressive society, majorly composed of the emerging 'new middle class'. In this pursuit, childhood stories and tales of morality principles have a formidable influence on her process of visual meaning-making. In this current work, the little girl wearing a bird mask illustrates the idea of innocence, which she feels is reflected in nature. She is meeting and interacting with animal species, and the mask allows her to do that. This work therefore is a representation of the prayers, thoughts and wishes to be in nature. In 2019, she was awarded the Gujarat State Lalit Kala Academy award.
