A CONTINENTAL-MARKET ARMORIAL PART TEA SERVICE Yongzheng period, circa 1732 Comprising three tea bowls and saucers; three coffee cups; a slop bowl and cover; an oviform tea caddy and cover; and a small hexagonal tray; painted with a large roundel with a shield-shaped coat-of-arms, crest and elaborate mantling on a blue ground and surrounded by grisaille borders and blue-enamel floral cartouches. His father, also Daniel, a cloth merchant and a middleman in the Zeeland Admiralty, was granted the arms in 1725. (Tuin means fence and hence the enclosure in the armorial) Daniel Jr. joined the VOC in 1718 but first traveled to Guangzhou (Canton) in 1732. Various mariners on his ship purchased armorial porcelains and some were inscribed and dated, allowing us a production date. Daniel later became a captain of the Langewijke but his ship was lost somewhere near the Cape of Good Hope on the voyage home. He left a wife and three daughters.
