He served as a midshipman cadet at Gothenburg between 1741 and 1745 and was an assistant to Crown Princess Louisa Ulrica from 1746-7. He was born in 1726 in Fästered, Finnekumla, Västergötland, son of Gustaf Gabriel Loodh (senior) and Juliana Cecilia Christophers. He married first Cecilia Beijer in 1751, having at least three sons (all of whom died without issue) and one daughter. They divorced in April 1768, and he married secondly Märta Christina Sparrsköld in September 1768. His first journey to China was on the ship Enigheten under Captain Johan Rundsten, a long trading voyage which finally lasted from September 1748 to June 1751, accompanied by Gabriel Beijer, Anders Gadd and Erik Thierstedt. He sailed again on the Götha Leijon, between 1752-54. His other voyages included a slightly earlier one, also on the Enigheten between 1757-8, and on the Stockholms Slott from 1762-63. He went to the Far East apparently on at least seven voyages. In Canton he is recorded in one surviving document as receiving a loan from the Chinese agent Tjobqua; see van Dyke, 2018, p. 32. The style of decoration on this pot suggests he probably ordered it on his first voyage, and he may have ordered further porcelains on a later voyage which are known with famille rose flowers.
