Guangxu period and later|The first, modelled as a large, gnarled trunk, standing on three small feet, the base with a sixteen character mark, the body with a small, oval, impressed seal mark reading [X? Chen]; the second, smaller, also naturalistically modelled as a gnarled tree section, incised 'gu mu', and with a four-character seal mark to the base reading [Chao Chengzhan X?]; the third, a box and cover also modelled as tree trunk, incised 'Pin X?', the base with an impressed six-character seal mark.|The tallest: 23.5cm (9 1/8in) high. (4).|Provenance: the vase incised 'gu mu', acquired from Jonathan Robinson on 5 January 1989 (collector's notes).A trunk-form vase bearing identical sixteen-character mark to that in the present lot was sold by Sotheby's New York, 17 September 2016, lot 1029, where attributed to Yixing artist Yang Mengchen (c. 1914-1928).
