This 19th century majolica pickle dish has been made in the form of a detailed Rex Begonia leaf with a deeply textured veined surface and serrated edges. The center of the dish has been finished in bright green glaze with brown accents. The green color bleeds into a pinky-cream band which transitions into golden yellow. The back of the dish is finished in cream glaze. The dish is largely in good antique condition with no cracks or repairs. As an antique item, the piece shows appropriate and expected signs of age consisting of crazing to the glaze and chips to the rim, the rim's top edge and foot rim. There are production related anomalies presentmonly found in antique majolica which include irregularities in the application of the glaze as well as flecks of material caught in the glaze itself, all of which are mentioned for accuracy. The back of the dish exhibits age related staining along with stilt marks from the kiln and is not signed, but the piece is attributable to majolica manufacturer Griffen, Smith and Hill. The dish measures 8.5" by 6.5" at its widest points and has an oval foot rim that measures 4.125" by 3.125". The dish weighs in at 11oz. This 19th century majolica begonia leaf pickle dish displays beautifully would be a great addition to a collection of antique majolica by by GS& H or other manufacturers, or works well as a stand alone decorative accent. A very pretty piece!
