AN AMBER GLAZED ‘HATCHED’ EWER, TANG DYNASTYChina, 618-906. The ovoid body rising from a short foot to a flaring neck, set with a short, ribbed spout, two small lugs, and an arched handle, the body decorated with hatching under a crackled amber glaze stopping unevenly above the foot, revealing the buff ware partly burnt orange in the firing process.Provenance: From the collection of R. Marian Hicks, OBE, who was a professor at the School of Pathology and Department of Oncology at Middlesex Hospital Medical School, London.
