Ca. 2nd millennium BC. A stone mortar and pestle set. The mortar of simple, cylindrical form, slightly flaring to its base. The pestle with a broad, flat base and a long handle. Mortars and pestles were commonly used for grinding grains and herbs to make flour and medicines. They were also used in the preparation of cosmetics, including the grinding of pigments and minerals for use in makeup. The cylindrical shape of the mortar would have allowed for easy grinding and mixing of materials, while the flared base provided stability during use.Size: L:120-130mm / W:55-125mm ; 455-1590gProvenance: Property of a West London gentleman; previously in a collection formed on the UK/International art market in the 1990s.
