Eastern Viking, Ca. 600-900 AD. A wooden idol is an anthropomorphic, free-standing sculpture, characterized by simplified features and a long cloak. The figure has an oval-shaped head with simple carved facial features, including large, circular eyes and a broad nose. The body is elongated and slim, with the arms and legs outstretched. These idols were used in religious practices, serving as representations of their deities. They were believed to have magical powers and were used for protection, guidance, and good fortune.Size: L:130mm / W:45mm ; 50gProvenance: Property of a European collector; formerly in a collection of German ambassador F. von Pourtalès, early 20th c., bought in St. Petersburg in 1910s.
