Ca. 1700-1800 AD. An oval-shaped cameo that has been expertly carved with a right-facing bust of Zeus, the king of the gods in Greek mythology. Zeus was known for his immense power, wisdom, and lightning bolt, and was revered by the ancient Greeks as the supreme deity. Here, he is depicted with a strong, imposing face, with piercing eyes that convey his intelligence and authority. His lips are set in a firm line, and his nose is straight and well-defined, adding to his commanding appearance. The beard is abundant and flowing, adding to the majestic quality of the carving. He is shown wearing a cloak that covers his both arms, leaving his muscular torso bare. The cloak is depicted in intricate detail, with delicate folds and flowing lines that suggest movement and energy. The coiffure is also expertly rendered, with Zeus's hair arranged in a classical style. The cameo is set in a gold brooch setting with an openwork, highly ornamental border. The catchplate with a pin is a functional element allowing the brooch to be securely fastened to clothing. Incorporating Greek gods in neoclassical cameos was a popular practice in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The revival of classical art and culture during this period led to a renewed interest in ancient Greek mythology, which was often reflected in the subject matter of neoclassical cameos.
