Ca. 1200 AD. A rectangular-shaped tray crafted from a thin sheet of bronze using the repousse technique. Repousse is a metalworking technique in which a malleable metal is hammered from the reverse side to create a relief pattern on the front. The result is a finely detailed and intricate surface that is both visually and technically impressive. The tray's octagonal-shaped interior recess is intricately decorated with repousse work, with the central section featuring a pair of hares surrounding a trefoil flower. This motif is a popular decorative element in Islamic art, symbolizing fecundity and the abundance of nature. The cavetto of the tray is densely ornamented with lotus flowers, further enhancing the naturalistic theme of the piece. The lateral panels of the tray are covered with fine calligraphy of blessing formulas, which were commonly used in Islamic art and calligraphy to express pious sentiments and invoke divine blessings. In Seljuk times, trays such as these were used for serving food and drink, particularly in the context of hospitality and social gatherings.
