Ca. 900-1000 AD. A slip-painted pottery bowl, with its conical form and short foot. The inward curving lip is a delicate touch, adding to the bowl's elegant silhouette. What truly sets this bowl apart is its decoration. Using a white slip, the Samanid potters meticulously painted dark brown Kufic calligraphy around the central roundel of the bowl. This intricate script adds a sense of history and tradition to the piece. The Samanid dynasty was known for producing a wide range of slip-painted pottery in the 10th century. The use of white slips as a base allowed for intricate designs and calligraphy to be applied in contrasting colors, creating stunning works of art that are still revered to this day.Size: L:100mm / W:240mm ; 705gProvenance: Private London collection; ex. UK art market prior to 2000.
