Description
Translation provided by Youdao
Ca. 19th century AD. A tinned copper basin boasting a broad profile, with a flat base and a graceful body that opens up with a wide flange that encircles the whole perimeter of the vessel. Through the mid-section of the lower body runs a circumferential band adorned with floral motifs, while the rest of the basin is smooth and undecorated. The interior of the flange is richly ornamented with stunning etched motifs of animals, vegetal tendrils, blooms, and geometric patterns that speak to the masterful skill of Islamic metalworking. The center is recessed and features a pierced drain with openwork decoration around central rosette. Such a basin may have been used for a variety of functions in the Islamic world. It may have been used for washing, for ablutions, or for serving food or drink. Its beautiful design and intricate decoration would have made it a highly prized possession, a symbol of wealth and prestige.Size: L:130mm / W:300mm ; 1.58kgProvenance: From the collection of a London gentleman; formerly in a collection of A. Kotlar, since the 1970s.
