Ca. 17th-19th century AD. A brass tray of a rectangular shape with a reinforced rim, which adds to the sturdy and elegant look of the tray. However, it is the densely engraved interior that truly takes one's breath away. The central rectangular panel is in-filled with fifteen roundels, each containing a beautiful etched decoration composed of depictions of animals, birds, and flowers. The level of detail in each roundel is truly remarkable. The surrounding decorative bands of similar decoration only add to the beauty of this stunning piece. Similar trays would have had both practical and decorative uses. They would have been used to serve food or drinks, as well as to display decorative items. However, these trays were not just functional objects, they were also significant works of art. The intricate designs and patterns would have been appreciated by both the maker and the user and would have been a reflection of the high level of artistic achievement in Islamic culture during this period.Size: L:470mm / W:343mm ; 1.14kgProvenance: From the collection of a London gentleman; formerly in a collection of A. Kotlar, since the 1970s.
