Ca. 100-200 AD. A schist head of Hercules with finely carved facial features, from the almond-shaped eyes with heavy eyelids, to the prominent nose and small, closed lips framed by an abundant beard and mustache. The hair and beard are arranged in mesmerizing curls, adding to the overall allure of this stunning piece. In Gandharan art, the depiction of Hercules was popular and widespread, reflecting the cultural exchange between the Greek and Gandharan worlds during the Hellenistic period. The figure of Hercules, a symbol of strength and heroism in ancient Greek mythology, was adopted by the Gandharan artists and incorporated into their iconography. However, they adapted the Greek hero to their own cultural and artistic traditions, resulting in a unique blend of influences. This Gandharan sculpture of Hercules exhibits the adaptation of Greek iconography to the artistic style of Gandhara. The use of schist as the medium of the sculpture, a common practice in the region, further emphasizes the artistic mastery of the Gandharan artists. The reverse side of the sculpture, flat and unworked, leaves room for speculation about the context in which this piece was created and the purpose it served.Size: L:220mm / W:180mm ; 5.95kgProvenance: Private London collection; acquired in Japan between 2000 - 2005; formerly in an old Japanese collection.
