Ca. 6th-5th century BC. A terracotta oinochoe featuring an elegant inverted piriform body, resting on a flat base, and is graced with a strap handle that nicely protrudes from the shoulder to join seamlessly with the rim. But it is the neck of this oinochoe that truly captivates the eye. Squat and short, it culminates in a trefoil spout, an intriguing detail that evokes images of ancient wine ceremonies and libations poured to the gods. The vessel is adorned with delicate circumferential lines, painted in rich, warm tones of brown. Daunian pottery is a testament to the ancient craft of pottery making, perfected in the region of Apulia, in southern Italy. This style of pottery emerged in the 7th century BC and continued to flourish until the 4th century BC. Daunian pottery is renowned for its graceful forms, intricate decoration, and skillful use of terracotta.Size: L:225mm / W:205mm ; 850gProvenance: Property of a West London gentleman; previously in a collection formed on the UK/International art market in the 1990s.
