Description
Translation provided by Youdao
Ca. 100-200 AD. A bronze protome of a goddess with her head slightly tilted to the side as if she were gazing upon something that caught her eye. The finely rendered curves of her bust are accentuated by the folds of her garment, which are incised with exquisite detail as if caught in a gentle breeze. The goddess's face is a true masterpiece, with deep-set eyes, a delicately shaped nose, and lips slightly parted. Her wavy coiffure is crowned with a stephane, a type of headband often worn by goddesses and queens, adorned with intricate detailing. At the back of the protome, a hollow, rectangular-section shaft awaits attachment, perhaps to a larger structure, allowing the goddess to be worshipped and revered in all her glory. Roman protomes, such as this one, were often used to decorate architectural features, furniture, or other objects of veneration, elevating their status and imbuing them with divine power. This protome may have once adorned a temple or shrine, where the goddess was worshipped and invoked for her blessings and protection.Size: L:120mm / W:90mm ; 645gProvenance: Property of a private collector, acquired before 2002.
