Description
Translation provided by Youdao
Ca. 100-200 AD. A bronze chariot fitting with a tubular shaft, topped by a chubby-faced finial, likely a depiction of the youthful god Cupid. The arms on either side of the shaft, terminating in upturned swan heads, add an air of grace and elegance to the piece. The raised molding that frames the shaft, further attests to the Roman mastery of the art of metalworking. Roman chariot fittings, such as this one, were not just decorative elements of a chariot. They played an important role in the overall function of the chariot, ensuring both the safety and comfort of its passengers. The upturned swan head terminals on the arms of this chariot fitting may have served as a means of securing the reins, providing greater control over the horses. Size: L:100mm / W:140mm ; 740gProvenance: Property of a private collector, acquired before 2002.
