Attic ca. 480-450 B.C. Clay.
H. max. 3 15/64 in; 8.2 cm Dm. Tondo: 5 15/32 in; 13.9 cm Dm. Foot 4 9/64 in; 10.5 cm
Fragments of a large cup. The reassembled tondo with foot (offset, Form B), both handles, three fragments of the rim and four fragments of the wall have been preserved. In the tondo, the representation of two women facing each other. The woman on the left is completely preserved. She wears a chiton, himation and sakkos and gives a long, broad taenia (ribbon) to the other woman who also wears a chiton and himation. The inscriptions behind and between the women probably imitate kalos inscriptions. The inscription on the left reads from bottom to top, the ones in the centre and on the right read from top to bottom. The scene is framed by a concentric band with maeanders and saltire squares.
Exterior glazed black, with a circular area of misfiring, probably due to the way in which the pottery was stacked in the furnace. Underside of foot with a broad black stripe.
Formerly Coll. Michael Waltz, Munich, since the 1970s.
