Roman 1st cent. A.D. Gold, carnelian.
Dm. 33/64 in; 1.3 cm
The round hoop with semicircular cross section widens to an oval setting. This holds a dark red carnelian engraved with a gryllos, a bird with a man's head on its chest. The gryllos was a popular motif for intaglios in the Roman period. It performed the function of a talisman.
Hairline crack on the edge of the intaglio and on the setting of the ancient ring.
Formerly Christie's South Kensington, 25 May 2001, lot 307, London.
