斋戒牌是古人祭祀前斋戒时所佩之物。此牌檀香木为材，所用材质与通常所见玉、瓷有所不同，在众多材质的斋戒牌中较为罕见。牌面刻阳文“斋戒”，另一面为满文“斋戒”，正反雕如意云纹，雕工简洁流畅，有非常显著的清代宫廷制作手法，为不可多得的清宫旧物。
所谓斋戒，《明史礼志》记载：“戒者，禁止其外；斋者，整齐其内。”清代沿袭明制实行斋戒。斋戒牌针对不同人员，分别有金、铜、瓷、玉、木、牙等诸种，皆是宫中日常用品之一。
