朱地剔黑的雕漆作品，自元至清均有传世，但数量极少，本品金属胎，两面均工，更为稀见。
《遵生八笺》有云：“墨匣有雕红，黑漆匣亦佳……以朱为地，刻锦；以黑为面，刻花。”这是“红锦地剔黑”器较早的文献记录。
香盒周正严谨，作蒸饼式，盖身以唇边子母口相合，两面以髹朱漆菱花锦地，上髹黑漆，盖面雕梅花纹，器缘洞石嶙峋，层次分明，其上生出梅枝，横斜遒劲，数朵寒梅怒放，雕刻栩栩如生。风格简约淡雅，造型端庄清秀，工艺一丝不苟，美感隽永自然，具有典型的明代雕漆特征。
