SECRETAIRE "A ABATTANT", Louis XVI, signed M.B. EVALD (Maurice Bernard Ewald, known as Evald, maître 1765), Guild stamp, Paris ca. 1770. Tulipwood, rosewood and precious woods in veneer, in part tinted, and exquisitely inlaid with bouquets of flowers in vases, leaves, baluster and meander band as well as decorative frieze. Hinged writing surface, lined with green, gold-impressed leather, with a drawer on top and double-doors below. Fitted interior with large central compartment and 3 drawers on each side, below 3 large compartments arranged in 2 rows. Gilt bronze mounts. Shaped "Brèche d'Alep" marble top. Brand stamp CTB. 1 drawer features old owner's label. Restorations and supplements. 84x38x(open 72)x134 cm. Provenance: - from a private collection, Suisse romande. Rosenholz, Palisander und teils getönte Edelhölzer gefriest sowie ausserordentlich fein eingelegt mit Blumenbouquets in Vasen, Blättern, Baluster- und Mäanderband sowie Zierfries. Prismierter Korpus mit vorstehendem Blatt auf bogenförmig ausgeschnittener Zarge mit Winkelfüssen. Abklappbare, mit grünem, goldgepresstem Leder bezogene Schreibplatte zwischen Kopfschublade und Doppeltüre. Inneneinteilung mit grossem Zentralfach, flankiert von je 3 Schubladen unter 3 grossen Fächern auf 2 Reihen. Vergoldete Bronzebeschläge. Mehrfach profilierte "Brèche d'Alep"-Platte. Mit Brandstempel CTB. In 1 Schublade alte Besitzeretikette. Restaurationen und Ergänzungen. 84x38x(offen 72)x134 cm. Provenienz: Privatbesitz, Westschweiz. Ein Sekretär mit ähnlicher Grundstruktur und teils fast identischer Marketerie wurde bei Christie's New York am 21.10.2005 (Katalognr. 380) verkauft. M.B. Ewald stammte ursprünglich aus Deutschland, führte sein Atelier in der Rue du Bac und belieferte die Pariser "haute société". Zu seiner illustren Kundschaft zählten die Ducs d'Orléans, d'Aumont, de Luynes und weitere bedeutende Mitglieder des Pariser Hochadels. Er fertigte ein heute verlorenes "cabinet à bijoux" für die "dauphine" Marie-Antoinette, nach Vorlagen des Architekten F. Bélanger. Zeitgenössische Quellen wiesen darauf hin, dass M.B. Ewald mit vielen seiner "confrères" zusammenarbeitete, wie z.B. mit L. Boudin. Seine Werke bestechen durch den sicheren Geschmack seiner Zeit und vor allem durch die hohe Qualität der Ausführung.
