Description

3rd-2nd millennium AD. A mixed group of drum-shaped stone stamp seals, including eleven accompanied by an old scholarly note, typed and signed by W.G. Lambert, late Professor of Assyriology, University of Birmingham, 1970-1993 which state: (R-814) 'Stamp seal of Lapis Lazuli 10.5 x 10.5 x 8 mm. This is ma round thick disc, with flat faces and originally vertical sides, through which it is pierced. The designs on both sides are composed of dots achieved with the drill. The one side apparently shows a curling snake, the other a simplified swastika. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is worn, but the dots remain entirely clear' (R-35) 'Bifacial Stamp Seal of Black Stone with Red Vein, 10 x 9 x 5 mm. This is a round disc, perforated, with designs on both sides. The one is a kind of whirligig, the other perhaps a bird on the wing and a variety of items in a semicircle beneath it. This comes from west central Asia and dates to 2300-1800 B.C. It is very worn, but much of the design is clear.' (R-70) 'Bifacial Stamp Seal of Lapis 9.5 x 9.5 x 4 mm. This is a round disc, pierced for suspension, Both faces have designsdone [sic] in drill holes alone, and each has a pattern which cannot be interpreted as a depiction. This seal comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B,C, It is in fine condition.' (R-69) 'Bifacial Stamp Seal of Lapis Lazuli 11.5 x 11.5 x 6 mm. This is a thick, round disc, pierced for suspension, with designs in drill holes on both faces. The one shows a plant with central stem and two sets of side shoots., the other a simple cross and a dot in each triangle so created. This is a seal from west central Asia, c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is in very good condition.' (R-64) 'Bifacial Stamp Seal of Fawn Stone 123 x 13 x 6 mm. This is a round disc pierced for suspension with designs on both faces done with the drill alone. The one side shows a plant with central stem and two shoots rising from ground level. The other has a design something like a swastika. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It has a little damage on the edges. but otherwise is in very good condition. (R-105) Bifacial Stamp seal of White Stone 14 x 123 x 5 mm. This is a round disc with flat faces, pierced for suspension. Each side has a design of drill holes. The one shows a kind of swastikas, the other a plant with central stem and two sets of side shoots. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is worn and corroded, but the designs remain clear.' (R-30) 'Bifacial Stamp Seal of Impure Lapis 15 x 14 x 8 mm. This is a round disc, pierced for suspension, with designs done entirely with a drill on both sides. The one is a kind of swastika, the other is a complex design not yet understood. This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is in fine condition.' (R-73) 'Bifacial Stamp Seal of Grey Stone 11 x 11.5 x 7 mm. This is a round disc pierced for suspension. The two faces have designs composed [sic] entirely of drill holes. The one shows a plant with central straight stem and pairs of side shoots. The other shows a simple cross with trianglular [sic] motifs filling the spaces created by this cross. This seal comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is in good condition. Some incrustation on the surface could be removed.' (R-109) 'Bifacial Stamp Seal of White Stone 12 x 11.5 x 8mm. This is a thick, round disc pierced for suspension. Each face has a design of drill holes. They are roughly the same on both faces: four triangular patterns based on the centre, This comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is a little corroded, but the designs are clear.' (R-63) 'Bifacial Stamp Seal of WhiteStone [sic] 15 x 15 x 7 mm. This is a round disc, pierced for suspension. Each side has a design done entirely in drill holes. The one shows a plant with central stem, flower of top of the stem, and two side shoots rising from the ground level. The other shows what seems to be a depiction of something, but not clear to us. It may be a recumbent ibex. This seal comes from west central Asia and dates to c. 2300-2000 B.C. It is worn and corroded, but the designs remain clear.' (T-628) 'Bifacial Stamp Seal of Dark-coloured Stone, 10 x 10 x 7 mm. This is a thick round disc.pierced for suspension.
